“ Tried this at the Japan festival event in Astoria the other weekend. Absolutely loved it. Maybe a smidge pricey but I thought compared to the other vendors at the event, my family got a sizable okonomiyaki and it was quite delicious. The line wasn't long but that was because we went when the festival was nearing its end and they were trying to sell their remaining stock. But even when I looked at them earlier, they were still moving relatively fast so I doubt it would've been that much different. The only thing I'm really rating is the food and this was schmacking. ”
“ I had seen this booth a few times at Smorgasbord until I finally tried it today. I waited too long! It is extremely tasty and, as compared to some other Smorgasbord options, a good amount of food for the price. It's also a great vegetarian option, and they have a vegan version too. ”
“ Stopped by Oconomi when they had their booth open at Japan Fes this summer! Their line was long but the food was worth it for sure. Absolutely loved their Okonomiyaki!! Ordered the Osaka-style Okonomiyaki which is a Japanese-style pancake cooked with cabbage slices and noodles on the griddle. It was also topped deliciously with okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, nori, and bonito flakes. Though it was just a food stand, the service was kind and fast and ambience around Japan Fes was busy and lively. A delicious small lunch treat!! ”
“ Ate at their financial district food station on Friday. Had the vegetable okonimiyaki with Bonito flakes and sauces. Quite good and tasty. ”
“ **UNIQUE & HARD TO FIND JAPANESE DELICACY** **INTERESTING GHOST KITCHEN EXPERIENCE** OVERVIEW: When discussing Japanese cuisine, most everyone is familiar with sushi, ramen, tempura, teriyaki and bento - and then maybe even - donburi, and katsu. Meanwhile, individuals really in-the-know may even have an idea about Omakase. But Okonomiyaki - - what the hell is that? Well, believe it or not, Okonomiyaki is one of the most popular dishes in Japan. Even more, It's available at restaurants, street food stalls, and it's also a really popular bar snack. So now, being such a beloved Japanese dish, why the heck have most people in America, never heard of Okonomiyaki? Is it some kind of wacky food conspiracy? I certainly don't know, but let me tell you, after trying this delicious delicacy for the first time, I really cannot understand why most Japanese restaurants here don't offer it. Now I mentioned Omakase before, which in Japanese means " I leave it up to you". And this is where the restaurant's chef actually chooses what the diner will eat. But now the antonym of Omakase is Okonomiyaki, which translates to "what I want cooked." So, with Okonomiyaki, YOU choose all the different ingredients and fillings that make up this savory pancake / crepe kind of thing. So to start off, the basic ingredients are a special batter, and cabbage. And then, you choose different vegetables, noodles, eggs, meats, or seafood to add in before it's cooked. Now, to make things a little more interesting (or confusing), there are two main, different styles of Okonomiyaki. The Osaka style, has all the ingredients mixed together in the batter, and then cooked on a griddle like a big friggin frittata. But the Hiroshima Style, has all the ingredients layered, one at a time, along with a layer of Yakisoba noodles, and then griddle cooked. Then last of all, after cooking, either style is topped with Okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, nori, Bonito flakes, and / or sesame seeds. Now here at Okonomi - undoubtedly, to keep things simple - all the ingredients for each Okonomiyaki are chosen by the chef. But when ordering, you can choose different toppings, such as pork, seafood, fried egg, tofu, cheese, kimchi, etc. And, vegetarian versions are also available. WHAT'S GOOD TO ORDER: - Obviously, the Okonomiyaki is going to be the must order item here. And my favorite version is the Hiroshima layered style, as it's the tastiest and most interesting one to chow down on, I feel (YMMV). - There is also a Modern Yaki version available, which is the Osaka mixed style, with an extra layer of fried noodles, and then topped with a fried egg. - The Yakisoba or Yakiudon are tasty sauteed noodle dishes, if you want something in addition to your Okonomiyaki. Comes veggie style or with pork. - The Guilty Pleasure Onigiri is a delicious Japanese flavored white rice. The portion size is small however. - The Karange Japanese style fried chicken appetizer is a tasty option also. SERVICE / DECOR: Okonomi is a ghost Kitchen, so as with the other establishments located in the Sunnyside Cloud Kitchens complex, only take-out or delivery is available, via food delivery apps like DoorDash. And there are no tables or seatings provided for customers in the building. Orders can also be placed for pick-up however, directly at the complex via a kiosk. And I can see how this option would allow an individual to order from multiple ghost kitchens during one visit. Doing this seems intriguing, as there are kitchens providing Latin food, soul food, vegan soul food, burgers, wings, and even Burmese food, which is notoriously hard to find anywhere. The pick-up ordering area is clean and decorated in a hipster sort of way. And when your order is ready, a text or notification will alert you to receive the food from the pick up counter. All in all, it's a very fun and interesting experience. PARTING THOUGHTS: It's a really good bet that you've never had the pleasure of dining on Okonomiyaki anywhere. And then maybe, a ghost kitchen is something you may have - also -never experienced. Well, if this is the case, what are you waiting for. Get off that drive through line at Arby's, and go have some food-fun tonight at Okonomi. You'll be happy you did, I promise. ”
“ Oconomi is in the Sunnyside Eats food hall, rhet id no fine in here and you can order takeout, delivery or pickup depending on the app. I would choose to order ahead of time directly from them and pick up if you're nearby. I went there for the first time today and my food came out pretty quickly (probably about 20 min after I ordered which is the minimum time quoted on GrubHub for delivery). The food itself seems to be good portions and I think the price is pretty reasonable. ”
“ 3.5 stars My bf and I came here to Sunnyside Eats to grab some other food. This is a ghost kitchen, so only take out and delivery! We got the modern yaki, which is the Osaka style okonomiyaki with yakisoba noodles. It was okay but I thought it could be a little more flavorful. I think I would've preferred these two separate instead of in one dish. ”
“ Oconomi is the brain child of the queen of okonomiyaki, Kazuko San. Now with a physical location in queens for pickup and delivery, it's made the dreams come true for all of us in the tristate area who crave delicious Japanese comfort food that is okonomiyaki. AND she is offering some delicious other options like karaage (fried chicken), yaki soba, egg sandwiches, and rice balls. Everything here is a winner. Prices are more than fair and the food is incredibly delicious and hits the spot. The egg sandwiches come on her famous homemade bread. The best bread in the city (that's me being conservative. I am a super carb lover). The bread is just right with a great chewiness, soft flavorful crust, and the perfect density. The rice balls are simple and so damn good. Not yet on the menu but it will be shortly. The "guilty pleasure" onigiri is named appropriately. Pro tip, buy more than one. Be warned, this place is addicting. Just getting started now, so be sure to get in on this hidden jewel of a place before it blows up and is impossible to get, because that will be the case. This is without a doubt the best okonomiyaki in the area. Bet on it. ”
